4. Setting Up Meilisearch

Meilisearch is a powerful, fast, open-source search engine. There are two main ways to host Meilisearch: on-premise (self-hosting on dedicated servers or cloud providers) and using Meilisearch Cloud. For the purposes of this guide, we will focus on the recommended approach, which is using Meilisearch Cloud.

To get started with Meilisearch Cloud, navigate to the Meilisearch Cloud platform and log in.

  • Create a new project within the platform.
  • Create an index called products. If you wish to use different index name you will also have to make a change in the codebase.
  • After your project is set up, proceed to the “Settings” tab of your Meilisearch Cloud project.
  • Locate and copy the Master key. This key should be securely stored in your .env.local file under the MEILISEARCH_MASTER_KEY variable.
  • Copy the Meilisearch URL and place it in your .env.local file under MEILISEARCH_HOST. Ensure you do not include a trailing slash at the end of the URL.

5. Feature Flags

You have two ways to manage feature flags:

  • Manually inside Vercel dashboard
  • Runtime override using Vercel Toolbar

The latter allows you to change settings as needed while your application is running. Overrides are not persisted and only effect the user applying them.

  • Variables Required: FLAGS_SECRET
  • Generating your own secret:
    • node -e "console.log(crypto.randomBytes(32).toString('base64url'))".
    • Copy and add to your .env.local

6. Live URL

The Live URL is the primary web address where your Enterprise Commerce application is hosted. If you have a custom domain, use that URL. If you don’t have a custom domain yet, use the URL provided by your hosting provider. The Live URL is used for generating metadata and can be used for additional functionalities in the future, making it crucial for SEO and the general functioning of the application.

Meilisearch Settings

The last thing, but also crucial for application to work correctly is setting your Meilisearch index the right way.

  • Go to your index settings. Remembers that index should be named products
  • Go to Attributes section, and:
    • Ensure Searchable attributes are set to ["*"]
    • Ensure Filterable attributes are set to ["collections","collections.title","flatOptions","handle","minPrice","tags","variants.availableForSale","vendor"]
    • Ensure Sortable attributes are set to ["minPrice","updatedAtTimestamp"]
  • Go to Ranking Rules section, and:
    • Change the Ranking rules order to ["sort","words","typo","proximity","attribute","exactness"]
